Foster Auditorium, Tuscaloosa

A $16 million renovation by Davis Architects of Birmingham has transformed historic Foster Auditorium into the new home of the University of Alabama's women’s basketball team. With new floor seating and a second-level overhead section, the arena has capacity for 3,800. An 11,520-square-foot addition in back adds weight and training rooms and meeting space. Outside the entrance where Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door, the new Malone-Hood Plaza and the Autherine Lucy Clock Tower honor the first African-American students to desegregate the university.

Mountain Brook High School Concourse

From unattractive service drive to colorful pedestrian concourse, Goodwyn Mills and Cawood has performed magic. Sandwiched between a sports field and the high school, the once drab space was marked with score lines in red- and ocher-stained concrete to delineate the public areas from the more intimate ones. Adding interest to the 2011 ASLA award-winning project: decorative light poles, a large green screen, sail-shaped shade structures over eating tables and playful hillocks and benches.

Daxo Identity

Birmingham–based Daxo, a provider of on-demand software for nonprofits nationwide, has launched a new brand including new logo, tag line, positioning statement and Web site, all created by Big Communications . The logo, made up of four triangles rendered in a warm-color palette, represents the four core values of teamwork, sense of ownership, integrity without compromise and fun. The Birmingham firm’s stationery package for Daxo won silver at the Birmingham 2011 ADDY awards.

Oakman Elementary School

Come fall 2011, students at Walker County’s Oakman Elementary will have a new school to replace the one destroyed by a tornado in 2008. The 95,000-square-foot building houses classrooms, a media center, administration offices, kitchen/cafeteria and science and computer labs. Designed by Lathan Associates Architects of Hoover, the $8 million facility features brick, EIFS and stone in an earth-tone palette.

Monroeville Amphitheater

Thanks to a significant donation by Georgia-Pacific, Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be performed from a new set and amphitheater in Monroeville designed by TAG/Architects of Mobile. The amphitheater will include portable seating, a courtyard and improved landscaping for the west lawn of the historic Old Monroe County Courthouse and Museum. Also involved in the project are CSA Group Inc. of Mobile and JubileeScape of Daphne.
